There will be only a few people who claim to never get bored or have an extra few hours on their hand. The most popular one is watching movies but in the last few years, even that got taken away from us. It was the online conglomerates that captured the scenario and turned it to a paid platform. Those who could afford to pay for these movies got the latest ones right at their fingertips while the rest had to wait for other sources to make it available.

Enjoy Free Online Movies On Your Device with Showbox App

This seems particularly unfair considering movies are something that is made for the people. It seemed unfair to limit its viewership to only those who could afford to pay extra. Movies are a basically a representation of society. What goes on around us and the things that we would like to see are translated onto the screen. Many film makers make a movie keeping in mind the target population. But including everything that goes on since it’s shooting to the final release, it falls completely in the hand of the producers as to where to display it and how much to charge.

CD Duplication and CD Replication - What Is the Difference?

CD duplication is the means through which you burn information on a CD-R using an optical drive. I know this sounds a little bit techy so I’ll explain some of these terms.

CD – Compact Disc

CD – R: This stands for CD Recordable. CD-R is a pre-manufactured Compact Disc that comes with a printable surface that is available for clients to buy from high street computer shops, online computer stores or supermarkets. In as much as your computer (whether laptop or personal computer PC) has an optical drive, it can allow information to be written or copied on a DVD or CD. A typical CD-R can be used to save audio data that can be 80 minutes long or 700 MB of data. They are the optical plan for clients who want to create personal music CDs. ‘Burn’ – this word illustrates how information is moved from a hard drive, laptop, PC or any other storage device to a CD-R with an optical disc drive. There is a laser within the drive that carries out the writing of information to the DVD or a CD.

This is the thought behind the word ‘burn’

Optical drive – these are the typical DVD/CD drives that your find on your computer whether it’s a PC or a laptop. The optical drive reads and burns information to a DVD or a CD with the aid of a laser. This optical disc drive is usually incorporated into the laptop or PC although there are external optical drives.

Mass Duplication

If you need to burn a couple of CDs with the optical drive in a laptop or your PC there’s no problem. But if you need let’s say a short run of about 150 CDs or if you need a larger run of 1500 – 2000 units, burning a single disc at a time will be time wasting. The best approach to this will be to contact a company that specializes in mass CD duplication. In spite of the rise of digital download, the DVD or CD duplication and printing industry is booming. There are many companies all over the world especially in the UK that offer the duplication service. This service is usually offered in combination with a DVD or a CD printing service.

The Duplication Suite

The duplication suite is the compartment where duplication towers are linked together in a daisy chain style set up. Each tower normally has between 11 to 15 optical drives which is almost like the drive that is found on a desktop PC. Companies that carry out large scale duplication on many jobs that are put through the suite daily usually have many duplication towers that will enable them to do their work within a short period and they do it effectively too.

There are quite a number of medium and small scale businesses that focus on short runs. This could be about 500 discs that use just a few towers linked together to carry out any duplication you need. Whenever duplication is carried out on a large scale there are efficiency measures that must be put in place in order to keep turnaround times short. Many large scale businesses have suites that are fully automated.

Here’s the process of how it works:

The master CD (The one where information is burnt from) is loaded into the control drive. This control drive is linked to all the units of the tower control. The next step is for the towers to be loaded by an automated robotic system that uses vacuum to pick up a blank disc. This is possible with the help of a spindle that you see when you look at the tower. With the vacuum system, there is no chance of dent or scratch happening to the disc if printing happens before duplication. A disc is loaded into each open tray of the tower’s optical drives. Once each of the drives have been loaded with blank discs, the information on the master CD is transferred to each of the blank discs in the towers. Once the burning process is over, the tower drives open up automatically so that the robotic system can move the discs from the drives to the second waiting spindle found in front of the tower. The drives are loaded again and the process begins from the scratch until all the blank discs have been duplicated.

Replicating CDs

This is also known as pressing CDs. Although, you will end up having a similar product to that from the duplication process, replication or pressing is totally different and it is a rather complex manufacturing process. In this process, a master disc is put forward by the client. From this original master disc, an exact replica glass master template is made. The glass surface must be properly polished because whatever scratches it, no matter how minute will affect the resulting master CD. After this, the glass master then collects a thin coating of polymer. This polymer layer has a laser beam that is focused upon it at specific positions which vaporizes the polymer and produces tiny pits found within the surface of the template.

These pits are microscopic. They are the physical interpretation of the audio recording or software data found on the original master disc. When the glass master has been made, it goes through a baking process to strengthen the polymer layer to prepare for the metalisation stage. During this metalisation process, the glass master will be plated with nickel. The final product is a negative of the concluding injection moulded CD. The positive mould is then created with the glass master. Every disc is injection moulded with a strong polycarbonate material with a very thin aluminum layer which is bonded to it. This aluminum surface has minute pits within it that are interpreted as the master information by the optical drive laser which reads the resulting disc. This aluminum layer has a thin surface of lacquer applied to it to protect it from any form of damage. Every CD replication process must be carried out in a better clean room or in 100 (ISO 5) or a self enclosed clean environment that is free from dirt.

If there are particles introduced during critical points of the master manufacturing process such as pollen, smoke particles, dust or hair it can produce errors that will make the master unusable. This is why setting up replication plants is quite expensive. The glass master production process is quite long and costly. This makes replication the best solution for only large runs of CDs which can be at least 500 units with ample time for scheduling and working. In summary, there is no difference between the quality of CDs from replication and duplication. In duplication there are fast lead times for short runs since there’s no glass master production required and it requires lower set-up costs for runs of less than 500 CDs. Replication however requires lower unit cost for large runs of about 500 CDs. The production time for a large runs of 10,000 discs is quite fast and it doesn’t require duplication process. This is what international artists use for major releases of music album. They can replicate as many as 100,000 units for mass media circulation.
